Guide a ship home across the galaxy, ration supplies and manage a crew.
You were nearly home. Then a black hole threw you to the far side of the galaxy, with a small ship, short supplies and four people relying on you.
Star Trail is a pixel-art space survival game about the long way home. Cross three sections of space square by square, ration fuel and food, patch the hull, and decide what to do about whatever is waiting in the next sector. Every journey is a new galaxy, so no two tell the same story.
A CREW WITH OPINIONS
Meet eight hopefuls at the start and take four. Everyone has two traits, and every trait cuts both ways: the veteran steady under fire, the tinkerer who fixes anything, the gambler, the one who eats two shares of the food. Some carry secrets.
They care about courage, mercy, profit, strangers and order, so the same call lands differently with different people. Over a journey they become friends, fall in love, fall out and hold grudges, with each other and with you. Back the same person in every argument and the rest notice.
Make a promise and it comes due. Push someone too far and they might quietly start sabotaging the ship, and when the crew go looking for the culprit, they won't always find the right one. None of it is scripted.
EVERY JUMP COSTS SOMETHING
• Fuel: every jump burns it, and nebulae burn double. Run dry and you drift for good.
• Hull: pirates, debris and bad luck wear it down. If it gives way, it's over.
• Food: everyone eats, every jump. Short rations stretch it, at a cost to morale.
• Crew: up to six people, each with a job, a temperament and loyalties.
• Scrap: salvage for repairs and upgrades, from deflector shields to a long-range scanner.
• Morale: a miserable ship is a fragile one.
A NEW GALAXY EVERY TIME
Each journey builds its own star chart: nebulae that hide you from pirates, asteroid belts that force you the long way round, lawless space thick with danger and salvage. The squares hold dozens of kinds of encounter: pirate blockades, derelicts and stasis pods, distress calls that may be traps, trading posts and black markets, refugee convoys, wormholes, a race you can enter if you dare, bounty hunters, a wedding, a funeral barge, and space whales.
Some come back for you later. Some change the chart itself: a hunter closing in, a star counting down to a supernova, an ion storm. And if an earlier journey ended with your ship lost, you may find its wreck.
THE SHIP REMEMBERS TOO
Take in an escape pod full of cats and your ship becomes a cat house. Let the sourdough starter loose in the vents and it smells of bread for the rest of the journey. Every ship trait does a little good and a little harm.
THREE SECTIONS OF SPACE
An 8×8 section, then 16×16, then a sprawling 32×32, each ending at a gate with a harbour to refuel and repair. Reach the last gate and you're home. Lose the ship, run out of fuel or watch the crew starve, and the journey ends; the next begins in a brand-new galaxy.
How a homecoming feels depends on who made it, and what they think of you.
